A Travesty at the Washington Post

Apparently, Dave Weigel has been forced out over some utterly trivial e-mail rants that were published by some shameless idiot. Speculation is that the Post didn't want a thinking conservative who cared more about facts than the party line, but would rather have some whack-job Glenn Beck wannabe representing the conservative position on the Post web site. I am canceling have canceled my subscription to the Post.

Good for you on canceling

Good for you on canceling your subscription since the WaPo is a wretched hive of scum & villainy, but I've never heard anyone refer to Weigel as a conservative before. People sometimes say he's a disaffected left-libertarian, but I never saw any evidence of libertarianism even when he worked at Reason. Ezra Klein expressly restricted the membership of Journolist so as to exclude conservatives (Tucker Carlson, though he calls himself a libertarian, being a case in point), and that is the list to which Weigel was posting.

For the Post, Weigel's firing...

was more like the last straw. It's gotten rid of all the reporters that actually reported useful news. Now there's nothing in it except the comics and I can live without them.

really?

Bruce, this guy was a sleaze ball and a party operative, pretending to be an journalist.

You seem to read -- no, misread -- everything through your own recent biography.

This story and this guy aren't anything you pretend they are.

As usual...

you have no idea what you are talking about.

That Kos poll on what tea

That Kos poll on what tea party people be.lieve that you found credible turns out to be a complete fraud.

Any thoughts?

The Kos poll and firing of Wiegel

Markos Malitos exposed the fraud in the 2000 research poll himself. The day the Conservative movement refutes the lies that they spread will be the beginning of a real conservative resurgence. IE Andrew Breitbart phony edited tapes of Acorn.

As far as the firing of Wiegel, why would they keep the conservatives that don't challenge thought and get rid of Wiegel for posting thoughts that were private to a limited circulation? It seems that Conservatives all believe in carrying guns but not too much about free speech or thought.

I was raised Republican but won't be able to vote that way until someone is able to give them back their ideals. Cudos to Bruce Bartlett and David Frum for actually challenging them and with reason and ideas.

Shame for Weigel indeed, but

Shame for Weigel indeed, but he's a good reporter and will bounce back. I cancelled my sub too but mainly over George Will's frequent errors

Dave Weigel

OK, I'll grant you that Dave Weigel said some ugly things about conservatives, and as a result probably should have been canned. A "public-square" job - yours, for example - is not like a regular private-sector job. There, if you tick off your boss, you'll get fired. You might say that in a public-square position (and this applies to elected or appointed politicians) the general public is your boss. Get John Q. Public aroused, and that's it.
Be that as it may, I think Dave Weigel was absolutely correct when he called Pat Buchanan an anti-Semite. Buchanan IS an anti-Semite, for Heaven's sake! Don't believe me? Then get a load of this, from his November 27, 2009 column:

"The Vatican has reaffirmed that Catholics in interfaith dialogues have a moral right if not a duty to convert Jews, and reaffirmed the doctrine that Christ's covenant with his church cancelled out and supersedes the Old Testament covenant with the Jews."

Not only is that a skunk-faced lie, it's an anti-Semitic skunk-faced lie. Hasn't Pat ever heard of Nostra Aetate? (That's the Second Vatican Council encyclical that absolved the Jews, collectively, of the Crucifixion.) I therefore give Mr. Weigel a pass on this, since he was correct on Buchanan.
